Summer of not doing something
When I began my pledge for #30daysofbiking on twitter I was a little dismayed. As a single dad at times I was only able to do the very bare minimum to stay with my commitment and even that at times was a stretch for my schedule.
My son is soon to be going with his mother in Wyoming for the summer. Something in me all the time of the 30 days event was just saying: “Just wait, you will get your miles in… be patient.” Every time my son Scary was with family or I have been given a few minutes of free time I have used it to be on a bike. That is when like other years the need built up.
The thrill of destroying my previous fastest ride times, flying across the pavement on two wheels and whipping around stalled traffic clogging my beloved Minneapolis streets is akin to setting the needle on the LP entitled: “Why I love being a cycling fool.”
I am making a promise this summer simply because I need to. Call mine #summerofnobusrides or summerofdecliningcarrideoffers. Regardless of moniker, what I am pledging to myself is as much as I may - choose a human powered alternative when a motorized option is offered.
In fulfilling this pledge I strive for the barbarian ideal of put up or shut up.

Refuge Prayer by Thich Nhat-Hanh
I wanted to share something with you that has helped me in a time of great grief. Hopefully it will help others in their quest.
At the foot of the Bodhi tree, beautifully seated, peaceful and smiling,
the living source of understanding and compassion, to the Buddha I go for refuge.
The path of mindful living, leading to healing, joy, and enlightenment,
the way of peace, to the Dhamma I go for refuge.
The loving and supportive community of practice, realizing harmony, awareness, and liberation, to the Sangha I go for refuge.
I am aware that the Three Gems are within my heart, I vow to realize them.
I vow to practice mindful breathing and smiling, looking deeply into things.
I vow to understand living beings and their suffering, to cultivate compassion and loving kindness,
and to practice joy and equanimity.
I vow to offer joy to one person in the morning and to help relieve the grief of one person in the afternoon.
I vow to live simply and sanely, content with just a few possessions, and to keep my body healthy.
I vow to let go of all worry and anxiety in order to be light and free.
I am aware that I owe so much to my parents, teachers, friends and all beings.
I vow to be worthy of their trust, to practice wholeheartedly,
so that understanding and compassion will flower,
and I can help living beings be free from their suffering.
May the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha support my efforts.

Army of Two: The 40th Day
This weekend the Bro-In-Law Sam I played the new Army of Two: The 40th Day demo that’s available on the PS3. It turned out to be a rad idea.
Here’s what I liked:
- Lots of customization: Weapons, masks, play style and what flavor of ramenyou are eating while you enjoy the game.
- It’s a shooter… always a plus for me.
- The tutorial was brief. You understood how to play but it didn’t drag onforevs.
- Action packed! You do get brief moments of respite but for the most part bullets whiz in the air toward your face. Awesome!
Here’s what I didn’t like:
- Jam packed screen: For split-screen co-op it is just a bunch of stuff mashed together. And we were on a 50” LCD.
- On-screen confusion: The HUD kind of gets in the way with limited info. Plus the action alerts are nowhere near the actual action. I had a hard time paying attention to the very bottom of the screen for command prompts. (But I am a barbarian.)
- That the demo ended before a big interesting boss battle! I want more!!!1! ;)
A very impressive demo, I liked the action a lot. I’ll be in line for this title for sure!
